The Secret History Bookclub Discussion Questions

 



Hello everyone here are all the discussion questions I made while the Book Detectives were reading The Secret History! Please be warned spoilers ahead! I did section it out by chapter so as you read you can pick and choose questions to ask your club. Please use these as inspiration for your own questions or pick and chose questions for your group my only hope is that this is helpful for bookclubs since I know how much work crafting great discussion questions can be. 

Chapters 1 and 2 

1. How does the prolong leave you feeling? Do we trust our new narrator?


2. What did you think of Richard's choice to switch his major from pre-med to English?


3. What is up with this Julian Morrows? 


4. Richard's first interaction with the Greek group seems very innocent. Why are they all so intense?


5. Do you think it's a little dramatic for Richard to have to change almost all of his classes? 


6. Why doesn't Judy's story alarm Richard? Does their group often get into screaming matches?


7. Was the purpose of Richard's "lunch" with Bunny meant to make us dislike Bunny?


8. Richard didn't seem to have fun at Camilla and Charles get together. Why is that? 


9. Why does the group decide to show their treasured hiding place (the country house) to Richard? 


10. What did you think of the interactions the group has at the house? Why does Richard insist that there's secrets being kept? 


11. Do you like that the author is reading the book? Does in make the listening experience better or worse.


Chapters 3 and 4


1. Richard is staying in the school's orbit for his winter break. Why do you think he's so secretive about his plans? Are they really that embarrassing? 


2. What did you think about the one instance that Bunny apologized to Richard? He even goes as far as to write a note and leave presents. 


3. What did you think of everyone else's winter breaks? What do their choices of vacation tell us about them?


4. Do you think Henry came back early from Rome, specifically for Richard? 


5. When everyone gets back from the break, they seem to be busy. They don't include Bunny or Richard. Since we know Bunny ends up murdered does that mean that Richard was also a possible victim? 


6. Henry bought 4 plane tickets to Buenos Aires. How could they really expect to leave without anyone finding out? 


7. We also learn that Bunny's family is broke. Why does his family waste so much energy trying to keep up appearances? How has this fact affected the Greek group? 


8. Why would a group want to have a bacchanal/ Dionysiac frenzy? 


9. Do you believe Henry's "story" that he shares with Richard? 

Chapter 5


1. Do you think its significant that Bunny wasn't there for their "killer" ritual? Was it really a good idea for them not to tell the truth to Bunny? 


2. We learn what happened in Rome between Bunny and Henry. Who do you sympathetize more with? 


3. We know now that Bunny is basically blackmailing the group. Why didn't they just silence him right away?


4. Richard goes on about how Bunny wears at the group with his awful moods. Does this have its desired effect of making us sympathetic for a group of murderers? 


5. What do you think of the early plans to take Bunny out of the picture? 


6. Henry shares casually that Julian has known the whole time about what the group did. Julian expresses concern for Bunny. Is this genuine or a signal that he's helping to cover things up as well? 


7. After their first attempt to kill Bunny fails, why didn't they stop there? Why did it seem like they were running out of time?


8. Their second plan is the hiking accident. Do you really think this was the best plan? 


Chapter 6 


1. Would someone ever be able to get used to living with that kind of guilt? 


2. Was it a good thing that Richard couldn't listen to Henry? Did going out make his alibi better or worse? 


3. Judy seems pretty upset with Richard going home with someone else. Do we get the sense there's something more to their relationship that Richard hadn't shared? Or is she just looking out for him


4. Do you think the aspects the Greek group are concentrating on for their alibis are actually important? Or just a distraction for them? 


5. Who do you think Rita really saw outside of the bank? 


6. What did you think of the events that were put into motion when they finally looked through Bunny's room?


7. The paper clipping Bunny had in his room mentioned the body of the farmer was mutilated. Why didn't the Greek group mention that the Richard? 


8. Does it make sense that as the investigation goes on, it gets more and more messy, leading the trail away from the real guilty parties? 


9. We finally get a scene with Charles and Richard interacting at some length. What did you think of their interactions?


10. Now that they have found Bunny's body. Will the Greek group be able to finally relax?


Chapter 7

1. How do we feel about Richard trying to gatekeep others mourning Bunny's loss? Does it matter if they didn't really know him that well?

 

2. The Greek group kinda splinters apart for a little bit after the Bunny's death is confirmed. Is this surprising?


3. When Mr.Corcoran has his emotional outburst at Richard, Francis, and Sophie's arrival, Richard faces the dark reality of what they did. Why has it taken so long for it to really sink it? 


4. The Corcoran's seem very reliant on Henry. Is this something that Henry arranged? And to what purpose? 


5. What did you think of the night everyone spent at the Corcoran's house before the funeral? 


6. Did you think the poem Henry read at the funeral was appropriate? 


7. What did you think of everyone's actions during the funeral? 


Chapter 8 

1. Would you be mad at Francis for making him take you to the hospital in the middle of the night?


2. Is it odd that Charles was so happy it was Richard who came to post bail for him?


3. From Francis, we find out there's been relations between a lot of the members of the Greek group. What does this reveal to us?


4. Henry has gone from the guy everyone is listening to to the guy that nobody really trusts anymore?


5. Did anyone else think it was odd that both Henry and Francis convinced Richard to bring the alcohol to Charles? What would you have done in that same position?


6. Charles tried to kill Camilla. Why do you think he chose now to do this? 


7. When Henry says everything changed the night he killed that man, is he referring to the farmer or Bunny? 


8. Bunny managed in the end to write a letter implicating all of them, does this make the fact that they killed him pointless?


9. Why did Julian give back the letter? Why did he choose to leave right away? 


10. What did you think was going to happen when Charles showed up with a gun?


11. What do you think Richard's dreams mean?


12. Did you think it was sad how the leftover members of the Greek club drifted apart? 


13. Did you like the book? Would you read it again?
