I ended up being low-key obsessed with this book! I feel like all the elements were put together really well and executed skillfully. As we kept discussing the book, my admiration for what the author was doing kept growing.
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Part of a series or Standalone: Standalone
Genres: Psychological Fiction, Mystery
Tropes: Unreliable Narrator, Abusive Parents, Blackmail Backfire, Addiction, Fish Out Of Water
Things I liked: This was a really good book for bookclub discussion! I would have missed out so much if I had read it by myself. So, my recommendation is to read this as a buddy read or book club book!
There's a lot of symbolism throughout the book, in dreams and just as the kids go through their day to day.
Things I disliked: Throughout most of the book, I had almost no idea what had actually happened! I know the wondering is what sparked excellent conversations. However, it still bothers me that we don't know for sure one way or the other at times.
Audiobook or Physical? I read both the physical and audiobooks that I do for all our bookclub books! The author did a really good job when she read the book for the audiobook. She does different voices for everyone it's very good. I also liked the physical book experience. Turning the pages just made it such an adventure. I definitely need to go back and annotate a copy of this book.
If any animals are abused, die, or are killed in this book: Two boxer dogs are used to test the potency of a drug, and one of the dogs dies. It happens off-screen.
The group kills a piglet together. It's described not experienced.
Extras: Richard's POV
