If you like 80's adventure novels you will really enjoy this tome. Theres endless adventures to be had with Jack as he travels across America. I don't think another book like this will ever be written again due to so many unique traits it has going for it.
My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Part of a Series or Standalone: #1 in The Talisman series
Genres: Fantasy
Tropes: The Chosen One, Hero's Journey, Alternate Dimensions, Green-Eyed Monster, Kid Hero
Things I liked: I wish we had spent a little more time in the Territories, that sounded like a really interesting world.
Things I disliked: I don't really like Peter Straub and Stephen Kings writing styles together, I feel like they encourage extremes in each other. I wish they had picked two characters and taken turns writing different POV's
There was enough happening in the territories or the real world, I wish they had just picked just one and stuck with that. Going back and forth made everything take forever.
I also wasn't a fan of how much a 12 year old had to suffer and a lot of the things were so yucky, I just was really uncomfortable with that.
Audiobook or Physical? The audiobook was okay, Frank Muller gives a good performance. I do think I would have enjoyed the physical novel more, it would make a good road trip book.
If animals are abused, die or are killed in this book: Lots of dogs and cats are killed but its not described in detail but it happens. This happens when Wolf is around.
Extras: Straub and King wrote the book in tandem but sending each other sections of writing that the other would edit and send back. It took them 18 months.
Theres rumored to be a 3rd book in the series coming out this year (2026)
