The Phoenix Pencil Company by Allison King

A really good read if you like both Contemporary and Historical Fiction! This does a good job of mixing the two perfectly. Monica and everyone she interacts with creates such a honest and interesting narrative.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Part of a Series or Standalone: Standalone

Genres: Historical Fantasy, Contemporary Fiction

Tropes: Epistolary, Coming of Age, Magical Realism, Dual Timeline

Things I liked: I like Monica and her navigating relationships a lot, you can tell shes trying her best but is human so shes making mistakes.

I was really torn up by Monica's loyalty to her grandparents. She has to come to terms with losing then soon and that's such a hard journey.

Things I disliked: Some of the computer stuff wasn't super accurate. Which took me out of the book a little bit.

Audiobook or Physical? I listened to the audiobook with all the different voices of Carolyn Kang, Jodi Long, Sura Siu and Crystal Yu made it really easy to follow along.

Extras: LGBT representation,

Lacks traditional quotation marks due to a lot of the book being letters and journal entries,

Debute Novel
