Hungerstone by Kat Dunn

It's a beautiful gothic novel with a sapphic cherry on top! There are some pretty bloody and gruesome bits in here, but honestly, that adds to beauty, at least for me, it did.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Part of a series or Standalone: Standalone

Genres: Historical Fiction

Tropes: Creepy Old House, Rights for Workers, Mysterious Illness, Rescued Stranger, Sapphic

Things I liked: I read Carmilla a while ago, so right away when I saw her name in this book, I was very excited! This novel is a retelling of that tale, and I love the direction the author took it in.

Lenore, at times, expresses her deep anger and rage at the world, her circumstances, and then starts doing what she really wants, realizing she has more power than she knows. This is such an excellent message for all women! Be angry! Be Loud!

Things I disliked: I would have loved to read about the history of the house they moved to. I'm very curious about how things turned out after the book ended.

Audiobook or Physical? I read the physical book, which was pretty good. I would love to revisit this one again by listening to the audiobook in the future.

If any animals are abused, die, or are killed in this book: A chicken meets an unfortunate end, watch out for a scene with a crouching girl.

Extras: Lenore's POV
