August 2023 Readathons

Romance Readathon can be found on https://www.instagram.com/the_romance_readathon/

This month I'm going to be doing two readathons! I want to start sharing my readathons with everyone mostly so I can have a detailed record of the fun stuff I participated in and the great books I read! The Romance Readathon is the one I'm more excited for I'm a sucked for regency romance. My friend Kamilla has also decided to do both readathons with me which makes everything even more exciting.

For the Romance Readathon I have joined the Hoyden team, basically how this one works you gain points based on how many pages in a book that you read so if you read a book that's 1-99 pages you will get 50 points and points increase with the more pages a book has, you will also get bonus points if the book is romance (+25), historical romance (+50) or has a LGBTQ+ or BIPOC author (+50). Right now I'm trying to make a dent in my TBR pile which I will include below.

The more points you get the better a match you make, I like this one though because no matter what each girl will have a ending to her story there's not really any losers. There's also male and female love interests so its very inclusive! I'm hoping to end up with a Viscountess cause I'm a big fan of words and names with V.

There are fun mystery polls where we choose random emoji's, this was funny to me because it made my friend Kamilla mad. For the first poll I picked a peace sign emoji which resulted in my girl risking her reputation so team Hoyden lost 75 points. There was a challenge we had to guess which lady posed for a nude portrait of course it was my girl Alice Walker/the Hoyden.  Then on the second poll we lost some more points. We lost 100 points this time. There was a peak at where we all stand and my team was second to last.

However I did logged two books now! Fake it Till You Bake It by Jamie Wesley which gave my team 375 points. My second book I logged was Someone Elsa's Shoes by Jojo Moyes which got 400 points. I also started two more books this week so I should be able to log those soon. We did also have another challenge where we shared a masquerade mask that we think our girl would wear to a party. This was very fun, I loved seeing all the masks that everyone chose! This is the one that I chose so pretty!

There were a few more challenges! I ended up choosing this cover for my favorite historical romance book cover. I definitely have this on by tbr pile which we won't discuss how long that is.

After this one we had the mythological ball! I chose an outfit Hecate wears in the Lore Olympus comics!

What was really great about this challenge was my friend Kamilla's picture was the one that was picked as the winner and what our girl wore to the ball! Kamilla had picked Nyx from the game Hades, which is also my friends favorite game! I love doing these readathons with Kamilla cause I ended up learning more about her and we discuss books together! ❤️

Now here's the best news! Our tea Hoyden won!!! Can you believe it! Now I know it's not about winning but I can't help but get competitive during these events!

Here is the video to join the readathon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C9VqtoRy14&t=183s

This one I'm on the Blue team, honestly picked Blue because I think its like the most common favorite color. This one I've had to ask a lot of follow up questions because there's no graphic with all the ways you get points and other general info which most of the readathons that I have participated in have had. I think the host wants people to watch the video for answers though on the discord there are a lot of helpful mods and people.

For this one we are going to be traveling the points we get are the same as the number of pages in our books we read. These points can be multiplied by our method of transportation like a plane (x2), car/sailboat (x1.5) however walking there will divide your page count by half while walking is a free option its obviously not the best idea. This readathon has a currency we get (GRC). At the beginning we get 5,000 GRC we can spend it however we want, you can get more GRC by reading host/cohost book recommendations. You can get 50 extra points for reading a book with a BIPOC author, if its a translated work or has your teams color so mine would be blue.

The first stop is to New York! The prompt for the New York trip is to read a book published by one the the big 5 publishers which would be HarperCollins, MacMillian, Simon & Schuster, Penguin Random House and Hachette. I'm reading Fake it till you bake it by Jamie Westly which was published by St. Martin Griffin which is owned by MacMillian. This book has 336 pages and I'm taking a plane which will give me 672 points and the book is authored by a BIPOC author so my final point total will be 722. Once we travel to the destination we can sightsee so I'm hoping to finish Someone Else's Shoes by Jojo Moyes this was published by Pamela Dorman Books and they are owned by Penguin Random House this book has 438 pages it doesn't get the travel bonus or anything else but thats still a solid 438 points if I finish it before the next prompt. For the plane ride I used 600 of my GRC which leaves me with 4,400 GRC.

I did finish Someone Else's Shoes but the next destination dropped by when I finished it so I got to log this for the Mexico City drop! The Mexico City prompt was a book with a beautiful cover, which this book had such a pretty cover.  I ended up taking another plane ride, seems like the transportation is costing more and more points. I wish the host pick books gave us more GRC. Only getting 50 GRC means we would need to read on average 12 books for one plane ride. Looks like my books will be getting less points later on but oh well. The next city is São Paulo with the prompt that the cover has to have 3 or more people on it. I ended up choosing Wolf Den by Elodie Harper for this one, I was glad I was able to find something on my tbr pile.

Alrighty! So we had 10 stops for the whole race and I was able to complete each leg of the race which I'm pretty proud of! I was concerned about GRC but I shouldn't have been. We ended up winning more GRC for completing legs of the race first. I ended the event with 1,450 GRC left so that was really awesome!

Now the only sad news is we got 3rd place but that's pretty average so I'm satisfied with that and me trying to complete these prompts made me read more which helped in the other readathon. Here's a picture of my completed passport!
