The Outsider by Stephen King

This was such a good book. If you love thrillers and mysteries, you will definitely enjoy this book. If you are a King fan, this is a must-read, especially since King seems to have such a fondness for Holly. There's also an Outsider series that I strongly recommend watching they did a good job of adapting it. There was a lot for a book club to discuss after reading this book, so consider it for your next book club pick!

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Part of a series or Standalone: #1 in Holly Gibney series

Genre: Crime Fiction, Mystery, Thriller, Horror

Tropes: Cowboy Cop, Blackmail, Emotion Eater, Fate Worse than Death, Genre Shift, Bring in the Specialist, Small Town, Deep Roots

Things I liked: I really loved the intensity of this book. From the first pages, we really hit the ground running.

I did like that the book was overall pretty realistic because things are often less exciting or very simple in real life. I felt that this was shown very well in this book.

Of course, I loved Holly. She's so independent now. It's been amazing watching her grow as a detective and person.

It's also very entertaining that King has written enough to be able to reference other books he's written. He mentions the Shining in this book.

Things I disliked: For it being a Holly Gibney book, she didn't come in till about halfway through the book. I would have loved more of her in the book.

Audiobook or Physical? I read the physical book, and the cover for the edition I got was very disturbing while also being eye-catching.

Good Quote(s): "A person did what a person could." Holly

"I'm a defense lawyer, son. I can believe anything" Howie Gold

If any animals are abused, die, or are killed in this book: Theres a dead coyote found that died in a pretty gruesome way. It's a short section, however, on page 513. Also, some gophers and a rattlesnake on page 514.

Extras: Multiple POV's we hear from everyone.
